In 1988, Douglas Marland created the role of Adelaide "Addie" Fitzgibbons especially for Susan. As a friend of Kirk Anderson (Tom Wiggins), Addie was delightfully high-brow, without being snobby. Addie had been a mentor, and former lover, of Kirk's.





Shot in New York, As The World Turn's Addie was distinctly different from that of Gail Baldwin, but classy, indeed. Some classic scenes involved Addie, Lisa Hughes (Eileen Fulton) and Lucinda (played by Elizabeth Hubbard). Three grand dames of soaps!





Lucina was VERY curious as to why Addie was on Kirk's yacht. She had the curiosity of a cat and the suspicions of a jilted lover. Lucy pretended to not be jealous, but even Lisa could see the irritation in Lucy's mannerisms. Be careful, Addie! You don't really know who you're shaking hands with!





Lucinda sees this picture on the desk and can't help wondering just how "close" Kirk and Addie really are. She goes away with the feeling that she KNOWS their relationship isn't over.






Addie, breathing a sigh of relief at Lucinda's exit, wonders just exactly why Kirk needs her back in his life at this particular time. He didn't elaborate and she apparently didn't feel the need to ask, she just got there as fast as she could.





Kirk had called Addie to come to Oakdale because he was having a difficult time in his romantic pursuits and was looking for encouragement and support. Trouble was, everyone thought he was still involved with Addie.






And with clenches like this, it wasn't so far off-base that everyone, including his current conquest, Iva Snyder, should be suspicious!






Of course, Addie did give all kinds of advice to Kirk about how to romance Iva and win her heart. But Kirk was never one to do things the conventional way~~~which led to more problems.







The typical misunderstanding of a soap: the phone call from the girlfriend..... Iva calls. Kirk is in the shower. Addie answers. Iva hangs up. Woe, woe, woe!






Kirk gets into the habit of calling Addie whenever he messes up with Iva or Lucinda, which is very often. One has to wonder if he doesn't mess up on purpose, just so he can call Addie!






In typical fashion, Addie gives Kirk her best advice, hoping against hope that he'll finally TAKE it.








But arguing with Kirk is just plain fruitless! He's going to do what he wants to do, regardless of how much advice he asks for.








Kirk would have done better to just run off with Addie! In fact, he did ask her, but she declined. Being the smart woman she was, she told him that he would never forgive her if he left with her and left the woman he loved (Iva) behind!
